Pharmacy Internship Program

Program Description

A longitudinal pharmacy internship program that allows motivated pharmacy students to obtain pharmacy experiences in a multi-hospital community health system. Our unique internship will allow interns to participate in an inpatient or outpatient structured training program that complements their knowledge and skillset acquired during pharmacy school. 

Acute Care/Inpatient Interns

Minimum Required Hours: 16 hours every 4 weeks (approximately one full weekend per month)

Note: Most campuses require every other weekend (see table)

Example Activities:

  • Centralized pharmacy services: Medication preparation (non-sterile and sterile compounding), dispensing and delivery/stocking of automatic dispensing machines
  • Conduct prior to admission medication histories, medication reconciliations, and penicillin allergy assessments through patient interviews
  • Perform patient education on disease states, new start medications, and high-risk medications  
  • Assist the pharmacist with conducting clinical pharmacy-based services including, but not limited to: vancomycin/aminoglycoside therapeutic drug monitoring, warfarin consults, and answering medication-related questions

Ambulatory/Outpatient Interns

Minimum Required Hours: 20 hours every 4 weeks (approximately one weekend day per month)

Example Activities:

  • Outpatient pharmacy workflow including prescription processing, third-party billing, and medication dispensing
  • Guided experience with patient counseling, drug information questions, and prescription transfers 
  • Non-sterile compounding and immunizations (if certified)
  • Business management projects such as inventory management, Continuous Quality Improvement, medication error reporting and process improvement projects
  • Community education and presentation opportunities available
